Health and Hygiene.
We all see bad health and hygiene practices at many of the salons out there; sometimes you might see it but not recognise just how bad these practices can be. The Skin Penetration Act includes a wide variety of regulations all designed to ensure safe hygienic treatments for both the client and the operator.
So, what are some of the bad practices? What complications can it lead to, and what “should” and “does” happen at The Beauty Parlour Erskine Park?
Surprisingly to some there really is a lot you need to know in order to ensure the health and well being of salon clients, our operators are fully qualified after extensive studies and are up to date with the latest requirements and techniques and insurances.
Pre Existing Conditions
Many patients may have pre existing conditions and not even know it. Conditions such as Tinea, Fungus and impetigo. They are all serious and infectious but can be treated. A trained and qualified therapist will be able to recognise these complications and refer you to an appropriate health care provider. In some cases it may mean that your treatment will not be able to take place until you have a medical clearance from your GP. This is a measure that some salons ignore but it leads to the spread of infections between patients and undiagnosed conditions can in some cases lead to long term complications that can’t be treated. Treatment may be as simple as applying a cream or taking a course of anti-biotics. If your treatment is refused due to a medical condition please don’t be embarrassed, we just need to have it rectified.
Getting a manicure or pedicure is not the only way to contract viruses and infections. It can be as simple as having a shower at the gym, the local swimming pool, trying on a pair of shoes – the list goes on.
Double Dipping the Wax Pot
Using the same spatula or stick to repeatedly apply and spread wax is a common cause of the spread of disease. When the wax covered stick touches the skin, hair follicles, blood or microscopic flaking skin will stick to the wax, placing this stick back into the wax pot will transfer hair, blood and skin to the pot. The wax pot is a perfect temperature for many germs to grow and subsequently be spread to the next customer. Single use sticks and spatulas must only be dipped once, then discarded into contaminated waste bins. Sure, we go through a lot sticks and spatulas, and use a lot more wax but it’s a small price to pay to ensure our clients well being.
Wearing gloves is a simple and effective way to prevent the spread of disease during skin penetration procedures such as waxing, manicures, pedicures, microdermabrasion but, before any new proceedure or toching any new client a new set of gloves must be used, and it’s the law. A pair of disposable gloves costs 15 cents, a small price to pay to prevent illness or an infectious disease?
Every tool used must be either disposed of or able to be sterilised between clients. The Health Department has strict guidelines on how items must be sterilised to prevent the spread of disease, at The Beauty Parlour Erskine Park we use onsite autoclave sterilisation of all equipment before being used again. Our autoclave equipment is calibrated every 12 months and records are kept and available for the Health Department during their inspections.
We all see those big comfy lounge chairs with the foot spa positioned below it, and to be fair, they really are quite a relaxing experience. But next time you’re laying back in the chair enjoying just how comfortable the chair is, you might want to consider a few things; does the foot spa have a disposable insert for the water, has the water been replaced and what diseases might the person before you have had. Foot spas are a perfect environment for the breeding of germs if strict guidelines have to be followed. The foot spa must have a disposable insert and replaced between every client, these replacement inserts cost about $1 each so you can see why some salons ignore this. At The Beauty parlour Erskine Park the cost of a replacement insert has been factored into your treatment and you will always get a brand new, never used insert for your pedicure treatments
Foot Files and Blades
The razor blade on foot scrapers can and often cuts too deeply and part of treatment involves placing the foot back into the foot spa where the warm water can harbour germs. It is illegal to use foot blades on clients due to the high risks involved, leave that to your pediatrist or GP - these are the only professionals legally allowed to use these impliments. At The Beauty Parlour Erskine Park we use disposable sanding pads on our foot sanding paddles which are replaced between every client.
The Toe Separater
A toe spreader is a great way to keep your toes separated for painting but they should also be single use, never to be used on another client. The spongy design allows germs and disease to penetrate the toe spreader and it simply can’t be cleaned or sterilised. At the Beauty Parlour Erskine Park we have no need to use these, soft disposable cotton does the job much more effectively.
Many salons are operating in substandard facilities that do not comply with current regulations, there are strict guidelines on how a salon is to be built and maintained as well as what treatments can be performed in those facilities. Guidelines include regulations on hand washing and drying facilities, the availability of a toilet, ventilation and whether surfaces can be cleaned effectively. Our facilities are modern and maintained as per the guidelines. The Health Department make yearly unannounced inspections of the premises and are always welcomed at any time, we have nothing to hide.
Doing Things “The Right Way”
At the Beauty Parlour Erskine Park we pride ourselves on our safety and hygiene standards. Right from the time I first had the thought of opening a salon I wanted to be everything the dodgy salon was not. I was sick of seeing substandard and dangerous practices with poorly trained staff. I set out to do everything the right way, it took 3 years of planning, 2 years of study and a lot of work to transform an old lounge room into a modern salon and treatment room.
The products we use have been especially selected and tested by us to ensure you get the best results from your treatments.
If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to raise them with us, we will answer them openly and honestly, that’s the way we do things at Thebeautyparlourerskinepark.com.
